The alternator has an important role in your Chevy, as it produces your car’s electricity. It uses the energy generated by the turning crankshaft to produce electricity. Eventually, like all vehicle components, it will suffer damage and need an alternator repair. As your Chevy dealer in Kaufman, TX, we can fix any alternator problem for you. These are signs that your alternator could be failing.

Battery Warning Light

The battery warning light comes on as a warning that something is failing in the electrical system. This light connects to a wide variety of sensors in the electrical system. Each of these sensors is attached to an important component, and they monitor their component for signs of trouble. The sensors are sensitive and can identify even small issues with the component.

One possible trigger for the light is an alternator that’s output drops below 12 volts. A health alternator produces approximately 14.5 volts. Even under a full load, your alternator should never drop below 13 volts. An alternator that’s registering 12 volts or less is wearing out. We can’t fix a worn alternator, but we can install a new one for you.

Burning Plastic Smell

Plastic burning has a foul smell. If the smell seems to be coming from your engine, you could have damaged wiring insulation. Your electrical system depends on numerous wires and cables to transport electricity through your car. Wiring is fragile, and the wires in your engine are protected against damaged by plastic and rubber insulation.

Time and wear can damage the wiring. Damaged or broken wiring can’t transmit electricity, but they can still receive it. The electricity that can’t move through a wire will gradually heat the wire section before the break. As the wiring gets hotter, it can set the insulation alight. This is dangerous as it could result in an engine fire. If you smell burning plastic, call us right away.

Dim Lights

Dim headlights can mean that your bulbs need replacing, but they can also mean that your alternator is failing. As your alternator ages, it gradually loses its ability to produce electricity. A weakening alternator will eventually reach the stage that it can’t provide power for all your car’s systems. When this happens, your car’s computer will have to decide how the limited power is allocated.

Your computer has a set of priority systems, including your headlights and the spark plugs. The priority systems must always be supplied with power. Dim lights are a sign that your power supply is low, and your lights are being supplied with just enough power to switch on.
