For nature lovers, there really is no place like Kaufman, TX. Situated in Dallas County, this historical town is home to many ranches and nature reserves that keep the area pristine for the regular cattle drives that take place around the year. If you want to leave the urban scene behind for a day and head to some hiking trails where you can experience the vast natural beauty of Texas at its finest, here are some of our top recommendations.

Kaufman City Lakes Park

Centered around the many lakes that dot the park, Kaufman City Lakes Park is a great place to enjoy a spot of fishing, boating, or hiking. The park is laid out over an area of 232 acres, and there are loads of trails that lead you around the lakes and into some beautiful, lush forests. There are also a few shaded areas with some picnic tables that you can make use of and a children’s playground to keep the kids entertained

To get here, simply head Northeast out of Kaufman on Highway 34. The park is well signposted and isn’t far from the town center; it’s only about a 5-minute drive, making this the easiest trail to get to from the center of Kaufman.

Post Oak Nature Preserve

Containing one of the last large areas of the Post Oak Savannah that once used to stretch all the way from Canada to Central America, this really is one special park. Much of the savannah has been destroyed over the centuries, however, this 335-acre area has been beautifully preserved and is used to educate people about sustainability. Of course, there are many miles of trails you can hike on that take you into the very heart of the preserve.

Post Oak Nature Preserve is situated just a short drive from Kaufman, however, the condition of the road slowly deteriorates as you close in on the park. For this reason, we highly recommend taking the trip here in a robust car with good off-road capabilities, such as the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 ZR2. This will ensure you don’t have any issues when driving here, even with the unpredictable fall weather.

Getting back to nature is great for the mind and soul. The urban lifestyle is hectic and often stressful, but one afternoon at one of these amazing places can really help get your thoughts together and release your stress.
