Due to its complexity and relative cost, transmission repair is high on the list of things to avoid for any driver. To prevent unnecessary damage to your car’s transmission, it’s best to visit your Chevy dealer as soon as you spot any warning signs that something may be going wrong.

Transmission Fluid Leak

Notice a small puddle of red or brown liquid in your usual parking spot? That’s a surefire sign of a transmission fluid leak and an indication that it’s time to get your transmission serviced. A leak could signal a broken seal or fluid line and should be fixed ASAP to minimize costs.

The fluid lubricates the moving parts of the transmission to prevent excessive friction, and it keeps the transmission cool and clean. Without enough fluid, your car’s transmission is at risk of serious damage. Plus, if the fluid leaks under the hood and comes into contact with other components, it can potentially damage them, too.

Grinding or Whining Noises

An unusual sound coming from any part of your car is always a cause for worry, and your Chevy’s transmission is no different. Unlike more subtle changes in the way your engine works, for instance, grinding or clunking from the gearbox will be immediately noticeable (and impossible to ignore). If you drive a stick, you may also feel vibrations or resistance when shifting gears.

There could be several reasons for unusual noises from the transmission, including loose debris between moving parts or contaminated transmission fluid. In manual transmissions, a worn-out clutch is also a common cause of grinding noises. In any case, a check-up at your dealer is necessary.

Gears Slipping

A common issue in both manual and automatic transmissions, transmission slipping means that your car unexpectedly changes out of one gear into another. It may also pop out of gear altogether, meaning that it drops into neutral without warning. Transmission slipping needs immediate attention not only to protect the car but to keep you safe: it prevents you from having control over your vehicle, which could be highly dangerous in traffic and at high speeds.

In manual transmissions, the culprit is usually the clutch, not the gearbox itself. Slipping gears in automatic transmissions happen due to worn-out internal components.

Delayed or Erratic Response from Automatic Transmissions

If you notice that your automatic transmission takes longer to engage than it used to, it’s definitely worth bringing your Chevy in for a check-up. Usually, this type of problem is caused simply by low levels of transmission fluid, which is easy to remedy if acted upon straight away.
