The many lakes and reservoirs nearby are full of some excellent fishing spots where anglers can wet a hook in search of bass, crappie, and bluegill. So grab your rod and head to one of these amazing spots for a day by the water!

1. Cedar Creek Reservoir

Located almost directly due south of Kaufman, the huge Cedar Creek reservoir has plenty of spots where you can start your fishing adventure. The lake contains lots of vegetation, especially in the coves and creeks towards the lake’s lower arm, which provide excellent cover for fish. The reservoir’s lower end is also where the fishing is best for the lake’s most popular species, the largemouth bass.
Here, the fish can grow to some huge sizes, with the record being over 14 pounds. The other species of interest to fishermen here are channel and blue catfish, crappie, and white and hybrid striped bass. The fishing is superb all year round but tends to heat up in the spring.

2. Lake Tawakoni

Situated to the northeast of the city, Lake Tawakoni sprawls for nearly 40,000 acres and is packed with fish. Bass are the best species to go after here, with striped, hybrid striped, and white all making an appearance, as well as a few largemouths. The lake is particularly good for catfish, and also maintains a small crappie fishery. Flooded timber provides the most cover and is scattered throughout the lake, providing the best cover for fish.

3. Bardwell Lake

This smaller lake, situated to the west next to the town of Ennis, is a great spot to fish for largemouth bass. The aquatic plant hydrilla has increased in numbers towards the lake’s northern half, and as such makes for great bass habitat, who congregate here in large numbers, especially during the spring and fall. However, not to be outdone, the real king of this lake is the white bass, which prefers the open water. Look out for flocks of birds that may indicate its presence.

4. Lake Ray Hubbard

Located to the north, right on the edge of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metro area, Lake Ray Hubbard provides excellent angling opportunities for blue catfish and hybrid striped bass, the populations of which have increased dramatically in recent years.  The numbers of largemouth bass have also increased along with the vegetation, and fishermen targeting these species have seen more action.
Timber is the most abundant cover and is found mostly in the area of the lake above Interstate 30. To the west side of the same road, a heated discharge area attracts all fish species.

These are just some of the best places to fish nearby, but there are lots more to discover so grab your gear and head out there today. Start making plans to visit one – or all! – of these fantastic fishing holes and you may even find a new lucky spot!
